Canora Veselka Ukrainian dancers awarded for excellence

Canora dancers won numerous gold and silver medals during the Yorkton Kalyna Dance Festival held from May 1-4 in Yorkton.

CANORA - Celebrating 50 years since the first concert of the Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dance School, Canora’s Veselka group won numerous gold and silver medals during the Yorkton Kalyna Dance Festival held from May 1-4 in Yorkton.

“I am very proud of how our club competed at this competition,” said Veselka President Cindy Wolkowski. “We had 20 group dances and seven solo/duet dances in Yorkton.”

The Canora dancers faced plenty of stiff competition in this large event, with 25 other dance schools involved.

The Junior 2 group and the Intermediate 2 group were the big winners for Canora, each earning three gold medals.

Junior 2 dancers received a mark of 90 for the gold medal in the Poltava dance, 92 for gold in Transcarpathian, and another mark of 92 gold in the Hutzul.

The Intermediate 2 group received a pair of 93 marks which produced gold medals in the Poltava and the Bukovynian, along with a 92 which was good enough for gold in the Volyn dance.

The Intermediate 2 trio of Hannah Dutchak, Ethan Chabun and Isabelle Kondratoff received a mark of 88 and a silver for their Polissia.

The Intermediate 1 group won a gold medal for their mark of 90 in the Poltava, and also earned a pair of silvers for marks of 89 in both the Polissia and the Hutzul.

A 92 for their Poltava dance earned a gold medal for the Junior 1 group. The Junior 1 group received another gold for their 92 in the Poltava dance.

The Intermediate 2 and Senior Girls pooled their talents to earn a mark of 93 and a gold medal for their Volyn dance.

The Novice group, made up of the youngest Canora dancers, received a mark of 90 and a gold medal for their Poltava dance

The Senior girls were golden after their 90 score in the Transcarpathian dance.

The Boys group earned a gold medal for their mark of 90 in the Tambourine dance, and a silver for an 89 in the Sword dance.

The Senior group was busy, winning a gold for a score of 90 in the Hopak, a 92 and a silver for Volyn, and another silver for a score of 85 in the Bukovynian dance.

President Wolkowski said the Yorkton Kalyna Dance Festival has become a welcome tradition for the Canora Veselka Ukrainian Dance School

“We attend this competition every year and look forward to going back next year.”
