Happy Mother's Day!

Friends of Eaglestone serve Mother’s Day tea at Kamsack

KAMSACK - Mothers were at the top of everyone’s mind on May 11 when the Friends of Eaglestone at Kamsack welcomed everyone to a tea at the lodge on Mother’s Day.

As family members of the lodge’s 30 residents were seated with them around tables in the lodge’s dining room, beginning at 2 p.m., staff members and Friends of Eaglestone went from table to table and guest to guest to pour cups of tea or coffee and to distributed trays of slices of angel food cake topped with strawberries and whipped cream.

“We prepared for about 100 plates,” said Mindy Fullawka, the kitchen manager, who said her staff whipped two quarts of whipping cream and used more than eight kilograms of frozen strawberries in preparation for the event.

Formerly known as the Eaglestone auxiliary, the Friends of Eaglestone normally hosts two such teas each year, the Mother’s Day tea and another one in the autumn.

Visitors were encouraged to purchase tickets for a lottery containing five donated prizes: a purse made by Judy Green; a quilt made by Marj Orr; a blanket donated by Mary Welykholowa, a bird house provided by Craig Currie, and a plush blanket donated by the parishioners of the Catholic Church.

Members of the Eaglestone board, staff and Friends of Eaglestone were photographed with a pot planted with pansies that was donated to the lodge following the tea and bake sale held by the Kamsack Horticulture Society on May 9. A similar pot was donated to the Kamsack and District Nursing Home.

“We want people to know that we would like more members on the Friends of Eaglestone,” said Susan Bear, explaining that the mission of the group is to “enhance the daily lives of residents.”

In addition to hosting the two teas each year, members are asked to attend an occasional meeting and help with various functions that are held at the lodge, she said. Members are also active with decorating the lodge to reflect the various seasons and events.

“The residents are always pleased to see us at the lodge,” Milena Hollett said. “It’s nice to be able to do something for others.

“We hear their stories and talk to the residents,” Hollett said. “They like to have us here and we enjoy being here.”

“I feel like an ambassador,” said Ashley Hollett, repeating words that have described him as a visitor to the lodge.

Persons interested in joining the Friends of Eaglestone may contact a member or visit the lodge to make their intention known.

Residents are now looking forward to May 28 when students of the Victoria School in Kamsack plan to spend part of their afternoon visiting and helping residents plant their garden.
