YORKTON — The Yorkton Business Improvement District gave Yorkton Council an update on its activities at the regular meeting on Yorkton Council May 12.

The vision statement for YBID states it’s goal is “to be recognized as a thriving, vibrant and welcoming business district,” while “to develop awareness and foster a thriving business district through collaborative partnerships, innovative initiatives, and exceptional experiences for businesses, residents, and visitors.”

To do that requires funding. For 2025 YBID shows income of $259,000, noted executive director Kaitlyn Kitzan. The income sources include $114,000 from the city’s business levy, and $100,000 from a city grant.

Total expenses are budgeted at $254,592.

Kitzan said several initiatives are under way for the year including plans to “unveil a refreshed brand identity, with a new logo and updated visual branding launching soon.

“A revamped website is also underway for 2025, featuring an enhanced user experience and a detailed business directory.”

The popular ‘June Days’ is getting a rebrand too, being renamed ‘Downtown CultureFest’.

Each week will feature a different cultural group showcasing their heritage through food, music, games, language, national anthems, flags, and live entertainment, stated Kitzan’s report.

Back for 2025 is the Clean Sweep Program in partnership with SaskAbilities.

“This initiative employs local workers to maintain the cleanliness of our downtown sidewalks, enhancing the overall appearance and accessibility of the District. The summer portion of the program runs from early June to the end of September, weather permitting,” detailed Kitzan’s report.

In addition to the summer effort, SaskAbilities has also led the winter sidewalk snow removal program. During the 2024/25 winter season, Clean Sweep workers were once again active in keeping our downtown walks clear. The Painted Hand Community Development Corporation is a key funding partner for both the summer and winter programs, and as the Naming Sponsor of the winter Clean Sweep initiative.

The Flower Pot Program will continue in 2025 in partnership with Young’s Plant World.

New in 2025, participating businesses will be responsible for caring for their own flower pot. To encourage engagement and pride in the program, YBID will host a local draw at the end of the season for all businesses that successfully maintain their flower pots throughout the summer, explained Kitzan.

The Santa Claus Parade is set to return Nov. 23, and Kitzan said YBID has a goal of 60 floats this year, adding 75 would be better.

Also returning is the Business Improvement Incentive Program, said Kitzan. Launched in January 2021, BIIP has become a cornerstone initiative for revitalizing our District. The program has encouraged significant investment in the community, with numerous businesses renovating and refreshing their facades.
