NIPAWIN — The Twin Lakes District Planning Commission announced on May 12 that the Nipawin heliport is now officially open and fully operational.

In a media release from the Town of Nipawin, it stated: “This critical infrastructure will enhance emergency response capabilities and provide faster access to life-saving care for residents across northeast Saskatchewan.”

The heliport is an initiative of the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission, a partnership between nine municipalities working together to improve regional services, including public safety. It was specifically designed and constructed to meet the operational requirements of STARS, enabling faster, more efficient medical transport during emergencies.

Michelle Sorenson, CAO for the Town of Nipawin, said, “We had our first flight last Friday.” She noted that the cost of the new heliport was just over $1 million.

The Twin Lakes District Planning Commission includes the following municipal members: the Town of Carrot River, Town of Choiceland, Town of Nipawin, Village of Codette, Village of White Fox, Rural Municipality of Nipawin No. 487, Rural Municipality of Torch River No. 488, Rural Municipality of Moose Range No. 486, and the Resort Village of Tobin Lake.

“This heliport is a major achievement for the Nipawin area and the broader Twin Lakes region,” said Jerry Kindrat, chair of the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission. “It reflects our commitment to building safer, stronger communities through strategic partnerships and smart planning. We’re proud to have been part of making this vision a reality.”

“The Saskatchewan Health Authority congratulates the Twin Lakes District Planning Commission on this milestone achievement and the positive impact it will have on patients in Nipawin and the surrounding area,” said Amber Barrie, manager of clinical services at Nipawin Hospital, on behalf of SHA. “The addition of the heliport at Nipawin Hospital means our most critical patients will have timely access to the urgent care they need and will optimize their chances for the best possible outcome. Thank you for your commitment to improving health care for residents in the northeast.”

Located near Nipawin Hospital, the heliport allows STARS helicopters to land directly in town, reducing critical patient transport times and supporting faster access to specialized care in larger medical centres.

An official grand opening event is being planned, with details to be announced.

The Twin Lakes District Planning Commission municipalities said they extend their sincere thanks to all partners and stakeholders who made this project possible.
