CARROT RIVER — RCMP in northern Saskatchewan are investigating the death of a child under 10.

Police say in a news release that their detachment in Carrot River responded to a report on Friday night that a child under the age of 10 had been seriously injured at a home on Shoal Lake Cree Nation.

Officers found an unresponsive child inside the home, and paramedics declared the child dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.

The death was determined to be suspicious and Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes has taken over the investigation.

A suspect has been identified and taken into custody, and the Mounties say the suspect and the child were known to each other.

Police say their investigation has determined the incident poses no elevated risk to public safety, adding more updates will be provided as they become available.
