WARMAN — Warman city council is raising concerns about the proposed location for a new joint-use high school intended to serve students from Warman and surrounding areas.

In a statement issued in response to community and media inquiries, council said it supports the need for more school infrastructure but believes the site on Township Road 384 in the RM of Corman Park between Warman and Martensville poses challenges that outweigh its benefits.

One of council’s key concerns is the cost of servicing a rural location. The statement said building the school within Warman’s boundaries would be a more “responsible and cost-effective” option for local taxpayers.

“Costs of acquiring land, of water and wastewater services, of transportation upgrades, and of power and gas servicing would come at a significant and unnecessary expense,” council said. “Much higher than what the costs could be by working with existing development partners within Warman.”

The city is also worried about the long-term implications for student transportation, including accessibility, safety and longer daily commutes for families.

“Locating the new school within city limits ensures better integration with the community, safer and shorter transportation for students, and greater alignment with existing municipal infrastructure at a more efficient cost,” the statement said.

Council said it will look to engage with residents and stakeholders to ensure community voices are heard as discussions continue.

The province has not announced a final location for the new school, which would be shared between Prairie Spirit School Division and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools.
