ESTEVAN — The Economic Development Week activities in Estevan served as a celebration of business and community.

Rebecca Foord, who is the city's community development officers, thanked everybody who showed up at the events and took an interest in what is happening in the community.

Activities started on May 12 with a proclamation at the Estevan city council meeting. The following day, a community barbecue at the Dennis Moore Centennial Park attracted more than 200 people.

"We went through 280 hot dogs and hamburgers, so it was amazing to see the business community there and people just from the community who were curious about what economic development is," Foord said in an interview with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ¶ÌÊÓƵ.

She noted organizers ran out of food on a couple of occasions. They asked for about 150 hamburgers and hot dogs from the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ¶ÌÊÓƵern Plains Co-op, and they had to run to the Estevan grocery store and get more. Meanwhile, they went through the ice cream that was sponsored by Affinity Credit Union, Foord Trucking and the ice cream vendor, A Cherry on Top.

Then on May 14, approximately 20 people attended a presentation by Chris Fields at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ¶ÌÊÓƵeast College's Estevan campus. Foord said Fields promoted how to be more positive, ways to be a stronger leader, efforts to build up the community and organizations, and how to get past negativity that municipalities occasionally face.

"It was a great presentation," said Foord. "We left all feeling really motivated and inspired to do more in the community."

People were encouraged to bring their own meals, snacks and refreshments for Fields' talk, and Foord said some did.

"It was nice to see some diversity," said Foord.

The event was sponsored by Community Futures Sunrise.

Promotions were also held on Estevan Economic Development's Facebook page.

Foord believes the week successfully conveyed the message about the importance of economic development.

"Something that Chris Fields really spoke on is the best way to get your community out and to be a part of the business community, is to celebrate the community and celebrate all of your businesses. I came into this role and that's been my main goal the whole time, so it was really nice to hear that message coming from an outside source and another professional in the industry," said Foord.

One day, she hopes that when everyone hears about economic development, they think about how it can apply to their lives and their community.
