ASSINIBOIA — May 11 marked the ninth annual Haley and Cayden Mother’s Day Run.
Hayley and Cayden lost their lives in 2012 due to interpersonal violence. Mother’s Day, 2014, the first run was established in their memory with proceeds of the event going to charity to commemorate Hayley’s love of helping others and bring awareness to interpersonal violence. This year’s donation will go to the MS Society.
Registration was at the curling lounge of the POW Centre on Sunday morning. Race package pick up was Saturday late afternoon or early Sunday morning. Peter Klein offered opening remarks, thanking the 46 sponsors and the volunteers on behalf of the Wilcock family and the organizing committee.
Mayor Sharon Schauenberg gave some heartfelt remarks and memories from previous years joining in the run. Les and Cara Wilcock also shared a few words with everyone. Klein again called on Cara, Hayley’s sister, to lead the warm-up.
The three, five and 10 kilometre all started on Fourth Avenue next to the park named for the reason of the run. While the first two runs ran alternate routes, the longest run repeated the middle length’s distance. Hutch Ambulance Service was stationed at the start/finish line, while Assiniboia Fire Department was stationed at a few locations along the route. Water/aid stations and bathroom facilities were available throughout the race.
