WEYBURN -- It was a bit of an odd one in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League Junior division contest between the Moose Jaw Mustangs and Weyburn Razorbacks on Friday night.
The two teams combined for 11 goals in the first period but scored only four more the rest of the way as the Mustangs took a 10-5 victory in Weyburn.
Moose Jaw improved to 3-0-0 and remain in second place behind 4-0-1 Prince Albert, while Weyburn dropped to 1-2-0 and sit in fourth.
It was another good start for the Mustangs, as seven of the goals in the first period came off their sticks -- even if things were dicey in the opening minutes.
Weyburn gave the hometown fans much to cheer for in the first 2:24, as Nick Huntley, Vann Dennis and Jack Missal all scored to give their crew a quick 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs went to work from there, though, and by the time 6:10 remained in the frame, they’d built a 7-3 lead with seven goals in 10:16.
Ryder Gilroy had four of those markers -- including a natural hat trick from 16:26 to 11:40 -- while Braxton Mac Angus, Lukas Salikin and Riley Bender had their other goals in the outburst.
Samuel Borschowa then closed out scoring in the first with 5:26 to play, capping a wild opening frame.
Things settled down from there, as Gilroy had the only goal in the second period. Moose Jaw then extended their lead to 10-3 in the third before Borschowa scored his second of the night with 8:29 to play to close out scoring in the game.
Gilroy also scored in the third and finished with a sock trick -- six goals -- and eight points.
Carson Isnana had Moose Jaw’s other goal in the third, while Salikin had two assists and finished with three points. Carter Hudyma had three assists.
Kayden Chrest had three helpers for the Razorbacks.
The Mustangs finished with 47 shots on net, Weyburn had 26.
Moose Jaw is back in action Thursday when they travel to Swift Current to face the Wolverines at 8 p.m. at S3 Arenas West. Weyburn’s next game is Wednesday when they host the Saskatoon SWAT at 8 p.m. at Weyburn Sports Arena.
